Celebrating strong women all over the globe for International Women's Day

Written by DSST Public Schools | 03/08/22

Beginning in 1978 in Sonoma County California, Women's History Month started out as a week to correspond with International Women’s Day. In 1980, as the celebration became more popular across the U.S., a consortium of women, led by the National Women’s Project, lobbied for recognition on a greater platform. By February of 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s Week. Throughout the following years, presidents continued to declare Women’s History Week, until March of 1987 when Women’s History Month was passed into law by Congress.

This year's theme is breaking the bias, which is focusing on celebrating women's achievement, raising awareness against bias and taking action for equality. To find out how you can support, you can find more information here at: Internationalwomensday.com and WomensHistory.org

At DSST, we are fortunate to have a magnitude of dynamic women who we encounter on a daily basis. Today as we honor women all over the world let us not forget the women who are in our households, community and schools. These individuals who we call mom, teacher, administrator and friend, are making daily strides to not only improve our lives, but to continuously work hard to let us know that we matter.

Starting in the early 1900s, women knew that they were an asset to society and began striking due to being treated unfairly, this led to the start of what we now globally celebrate as International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. Today on International Women’s Day, we show gratitude for all of the hard-working women - past and present - who stood up for what they believed in and continue to pave the way for other girls, women and trans women around the globe.

Thank you to all of the women in the DSST community for all that you have done and all that you continue to do.

Today we stand with, recognize and celebrate women from all over the world #BreaktheBias.
