DSST: College View career fair opens doors to new opportunities for students

On Oct. 29, DSST: College View buzzed with energy as students explored a world of career possibilities at the school’s first STEM-focused Career Fair. With representatives from more than 20 Denver agencies—ranging from aviation and public health to the Denver Fire Department and city attorneys—the event offered students a unique chance to discover paths they may have never considered.

The idea for the fair originated nearly a year ago when Jacob Quattrini—a science teacher at College View High School—was inspired by the success of a College Fair hosted on campus.

“Melissa Mayes and the College Success Team at College View hosted a College Fair in the gym in November 2023. It was exciting to see many of our 11th and 12th graders engage with representatives from so many different universities,” Quattrini shared. “I wanted to provide a similar experience to all students at our campus but focused on career exposure.”

With the help of Audrey Holmes (DSST’s Director of STEM and Student Experience) and Alyse West from the City and County of Denver, the idea was brought to life.

For Quattrini, the fair was about more than just career exposure—it was about opening doors.

“After teaching 9th graders for many years, you realize that most students at that age don’t know the multitude of career opportunities available to them after high school and college,” he explained. “Our mission at DSST pushes our students to attend college, but I imagine it’s difficult to pursue college when you don’t know about the career opportunities that would become available afterward.”

The Career Fair created moments of inspiration that will last far beyond the day itself. Students asked thoughtful questions, interacted with engaging activities and demonstrated DSST’s core values of curiosity and respect throughout the event.

Quattrini shared that it was “particularly inspiring to see students engage who are historically reluctant to fully participate in the classroom setting.

“After the event, a 12th grader approached me and said, ‘Mr. Q, I know what I want to do after high school now’,” he added.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of students, staff and professionals alike, the Career Fair was a resounding success. Representatives from Denver agencies came prepared with interactive activities, swag and plenty of enthusiasm, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Quattrini also credited the collaboration with West and the City and County of Denver for their thoughtful preparation, which helped make the event seamless and impactful.

As students left the Career Fair with new aspirations and ideas, the event proved how transformative career exposure can be.
