At Our Core: Are You Ready to Vote?

Written by Stefanie Gilary | 10/03/19

The work you do every day is essential to furthering our mission of eliminating educational inequity in urban education. And so is getting out the vote.  As you likely know, the School Board election on November 5 is fast approaching, and this year, there are three contested races- District 1, District 5, and At-Large.

The school board has significant power over the way DSST schools run on a daily basis. Even if you do not live in one of the two districts up for election, but are a Denver resident, your vote for an at-large candidate is still essential. You can find out which district you live in on the DPS Board Website. In Aurora, there are 3 contested board races and all are at-large.  Those with the highest number of votes win the 3 open seats. As an Aurora resident, you can vote for all 3 at-large candidates. This is a huge year for voter participation, and we are aiming for 100% of our community to vote in this election.  But we can’t do it without you, our dedicated and invested staff!

A great way to learn about where the candidates stand on the important issues is to attend a candidate forum. Don’t miss these two opportunities to get informed and ready to cast your vote.

In addition to the school board election, Proposition CC is another important education-related item that you will find on the ballot. Prop CC will allow Colorado to keep all revenue already collected under the current tax rates, and anything collected above the current revenue cap will be put towards K-12 education, higher education, and transportation. To be clear, Prop CC is not a tax raise, but instead a way for teachers, students, schools, and our greater community to get the resources they need.

Voting is particularly easy in Colorado. The ballots for the November election will arrive in mailboxes statewide beginning October 14. Simply drop your completed ballot in any of the designated boxes across the city, mail it in, or vote in person from October 28 through November 5.

To vote in person or to register to vote up until November 5, visit your nearest polling center, which you can find at this website:  www.GoVoteColorado.com

We hope to see you at one or both of the candidate forums in the coming weeks!
