Celebrating Neurodiversity Acceptance Month through Student Stories (Clone)

Written by DSST Public Schools | 04/21/26

April is Neurodiversity Acceptance Month, a time to celebrate the full range of human minds and the unique strengths each person brings to our community. Across DSST, that celebration isn't confined to a single month. It shows up every day, in classrooms, on mountain slopes, on stages, and on yoga mats. This year has given us no shortage of moments to be proud of. Here are just a few stories from center programs across the network that bring this month’s special celebration to life.

From DSST: Cedar

When Leyat S. visited DSST: Cedar High School last spring, she walked the hallways with a mix of excitement and nerves. Transitioning from Montview Middle School to high school is a big step for any student. But this year, Leyat has blossomed - participating confidently with peers, engaging deeply in her learning, and growing in her independence in ways that have moved everyone around her. Autism presents real challenges, and Leyat meets them with courage every single day.

Alden D. and Chloe B. took that same spirit of determination to the slopes this winter, medaling in skiing at the local Special Olympics. Their hard work and joy on the mountain inspired everyone cheering them on, a reminder that our students shine in every arena, not just the classroom.

When the school year began, Alan D. was a non-reader. Today, he has passed Level 1 of 6 in DSST's phonics program and continues to grow exponentially each week. His most recent i-Ready Diagnostic showed a 68-point jump, a testament to his persistence and the power of instruction that meets students where they are.

From DSST: Conservatory Green

Some moments are impossible to plan. At last year's 8th Grade Continuation, one student, known schoolwide for his love of pirates, took the stage and belted out several triumphant "AHOYs!" Without hesitation, the entire school "AHOYED!" right back. It was pure DSST: joyful, spontaneous, and full of love for exactly who our students are.

From DSST: Montview

This year, DSST: Montview brought back the Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) program, and the impact has been immediate. PALS have supported students on field trips, in classrooms, and across school activities building relationships, modeling leadership, and reminding us all what it looks like when a community truly shows up for one another.

Move Through Yoga also joined DSST: Montview this year, bringing movement, breathing techniques, and mindfulness into classrooms. Students have embraced the practice, finding new tools for focus and emotional regulation. One student, James Williams, connected so deeply with the program that his experience that he was featured on 9News! Even DSST's youngest students have caught the yoga bug, learning to center themselves and breathe through challenges in ways that will serve them for years to come. You can see their experience in action on this Instagram Reel from Move Through Yoga.

From Montview & Green Valley Ranch

In addition to joining in on the Move Through Yoga fun, the DSST: Green Valley Ranch team shouted out Neveah. Her journey from elementary school to high school has been one of steady, inspiring growth. Now a high schooler, she brings genuine enthusiasm to math, tackles challenges with persistence and radiates pride in her work. Her confidence lifts the entire classroom, and watching her grow into a self-assured, independent learner is exactly the kind of reminder that keeps this community going.

These stories are not exceptions. They are DSST. Across our network, students are discovering their strengths, celebrating who they are, and building the skills to thrive. Neurodiversity Acceptance Month gives us a moment to pause and name what is always true: every student deserves to be known, valued and supported, and in our schools, they are.
