Help for hunger

The coronavirus pandemic is revealing the inequities in Colorado's food supply as the 225,000 students who rely on free or subsidized lunches stay home, families lose income due to layoffs, the homebound and elderly face obstacles due to stay-at-home orders, and frontline staff work grueling hours. Businesses and nonprofits in the state are stepping in to fill the void and feed people:

  • Longmont Meals on Wheels, which received a grant from the Community Foundation's Covid-19 Response Fund Boulder County, is delivering a week's worth of meals to its recipients every Monday. And when they're not delivering food, they're checking in with their clients for a "tele-wellness check."
  • The Denver Metro Emergency Food Network has delivered nearly 100,000 meals to low-income families and has partnered with Denver's DSST Public Schools system to launch the (so-far) $70,000 DSST Covid Family Relief Fund, which is now providing about 1,800 meals every week to students, family and staff
