Let’s face it- public education is tough and the planet is on fire. But nothing brightens up our days like a stiff drink the love of a cherished pet. That’s why we thought it was more important than ever to start a new series- Pet of the Week! We’ll be kicking off the next few editions with some Home Office members who have generously shared the joy that their beloved pets bring to their lives, every day.
This week, we interviewed Family Engagement Manager Shelby Johnson-Floria about her tiny superstar Shih Tzu named Roxy.
You may know Shelby through the close work with our schools in engaging families in new ways, from ensuring a seamless onboarding experience for new families to rolling out a new communication tool called Flyer. She also supports many school-based events, including Parent-Teacher Conferences and Parent Advocacy Team meetings. If it helps strengthen the partnership between DSST Schools and our families - Shelby is on it!
Shelby has had Roxy for 11.5 years- she will be turning 13 in early December. Being the Sagittarius that she is, Roxy is always on the move. She’s obsessed with going for walks, whether it’s just strolling around her Baker neighborhood like she owns it, or chasing the geese in City Park and Wash Park.
At home, Roxy enjoys playing with her pink bunny and savoring cheese, all different kinds of meats, and sweet potatoes. She also loves carrots, and shares a special “carrot time” with Shelby’s husband John every day. Shelby is only slightly jealous of this special bonding moment.

Roxy is so loveable that one of the markings on her fur is in the shape of a heart!

And this past Halloween, Roxy proudly sported her Ewok costume!
May the Force Be Shih Tzu!
Just like her mom, Roxy likes to stay politically engaged. She even attended an Obama rally at Civic Center Park in 2008.
