It’s time to honor yet another incredible staff member! This week, the spotlight shines on DSST: Conservatory Green High School Physics teacher Nick Wilsey.
Nick has been teaching for 7 years now, and this is his third year teaching Physics at DSST. Nick brings both a sense of humor and relentless fun to both his 9th grade Physics and Creative Engineering classrooms.
In both of these classes, Nick consistently makes connections to the real world with a dynamic multimedia approach, whether it’s scenarios, videos, or photos. During his Creative Engineering class, students in grades 9-11 have extra special opportunities to apply their learning and see it in action. This ranges from designing a mobile app to solve real world problems - one team of students created a Service Animal Renter app - to creating water rockets to fly as high as possible. Students also built a rover lander, working within a budget to build and land a Mars rover, all without cracking the egg inside! The rovers were dropped from the second story landing of CG HS- you can skip to the :39 mark in the video to see how it went!
Just last week, students were creating a hydraulic arm that can play jenga!
Nick doesn’t just lead students in new engineering and physics pursuits- he’s also a leader to staff throughout the building. As the Science Department Chair, he is always providing feedback on lessons, giving advice and sharing resources, and pushing teachers to think about the whole student and improve processes overall at DSST: Conservatory Green HS. He’s also an amazing mentor teacher to Apprentice Teacher Kyle Gordon, always providing robust feedback to help him grow. And he is dedicated to self-improvement, continually seeking out feedback from his coach, and stepping up and stepping in wherever he may be needed.
Our students are lucky to have teachers like Nick who help them apply their growing knowledge in a meaningful way and expand their STEM horizons. We look forward to seeing how these young engineers will continue to explore the world of science with Nick Wilsey!
