School attendance FAQs: What you need to know

At DSST Public Schools, we understand that life happens and sometimes students need to miss school. However, attendance is a critical part of academic success, and we’re here to help clarify what qualifies as an excused absence and how to navigate attendance challenges.

Excused vs. unexcused absences: How to tell the difference

When students are absent, families must communicate the reason with the school to determine if the absence can be excused. Why does this matter? Excused absences don’t count toward truancy, so keeping the school informed is essential.

• Here’s what qualifies as an excused absence:
  • Illness: If your student is out for three or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required.
  • Family emergencies: Unexpected situations happen, and we’re here to support you.
  • Necessary appointments: These should ideally be scheduled outside school hours, but we understand that’s not always possible.

Each student has up to 10 excused absences per year. Beyond that, additional documentation will be required to excuse further absences.

• Unexcused absences include:
  • Missing three or more consecutive days without proper documentation.
  • Early pick-ups without valid documentation.
  • Exceeding the 10-day excused absence limit without additional required paperwork.

What if my child seems sick?

Wondering whether to keep your student home? Use this quick rule of thumb: if they have a fever, are vomiting, or showing other severe symptoms, it’s best to let them rest and recover. For other situations, check with your school’s guidelines—or call the front office!

Too cold to travel?

We understand that Colorado winters can be tough! If cold weather is a barrier, reach out to the school. We have coats and other warm clothing to ensure students stay safe and cozy on their way to class.

You’re not alone—this can be a challenging situation for families. Our team of teachers, deans and social workers is here to help. Together, we’ll work to understand the root of the issue and find solutions to support your student’s attendance.
