The Round 1 SchoolChoice window for the 2026-2027 will now begin in early December, which is over a month earlier than last year. As you navigate this important step in securing the best educational match for your child, this FAQ will guide you through key details about the lottery system and how to apply to DSST Public Schools for the upcoming school year.

What is the SchoolChoice process?

The SchoolChoice process allows families to rank their preferred schools within Denver Public Schools (DPS), including DSST’s exceptional STEM-focused schools. This equitable lottery system ensures all students have the opportunity to attend a school that fits their needs.

What are the new dates for Round 1 of SchoolChoice?

  • Window opens: Monday, Dec. 2, 2025, at 10 a.m.
  • Window closes: Monday, Jan. 20, 2026, at 4 p.m.

Applications submitted during this window have the best chance of matching with a preferred school.

How does SchoolChoice work?

The process involves three steps:

What should I do to get ready?

Who needs to complete a SchoolChoice application?

  • Most students in transitions grades (5th to 6th and 8th to 9th)
  • Students who are transferring schools or new to DSST

Does ranking a school higher improve my chances?

No, your rankings simply reflect your preferences and do not affect your chances. Schools cannot see how you ranked them. Matches are based on your priority group for the school and your lottery number, ensuring a fair process.

Should I rank more than one school?

We recommend listing multiple schools to keep your options open. Families can rank up to 12 schools on the DPS SchoolChoice application in Round 1. Be sure to include only schools you are willing to attend.

How are matches decided?

  • Matches are determined by the following factors:
    • Your rankings on the SchoolChoice application.
    • School capacity and available space.
    • Priority preferences, such as having a sibling enrolled or living within the school’s boundary. Learn more about DPS Priorities here.

Will listing only one school increase my chances?

No, listing just one school won’t improve your odds. It’s better to include all schools you’re interested in to maximize your chances of securing a match that works for your family.  However, most families who apply in Round 1 will, on average, place within their first or second choice.

What happens after submitting the application?

After the deadline, DPS processes applications and matches students to schools. Families are notified of their matches in late February.

This info is for DPS and I want to apply to AST, what should I do?

Families interested in attending Aurora Science & Tech Middle or High School must complete this online-only enrollment application. Enrollment at Aurora Science & Tech is managed through a DSST-run lottery. You can learn more about that process here.

The application window will align with DPS window (Dec. 2 - Jan 20) and application results will be shared in early February.
