Born on the Ranch, Built at The Ranch: Jayden Gamboa is Ready for the Future

"It's not a hobby, it's my life.” — Jayden Gamboa, DSST: Green Valley Ranch Senior

Some students come to DSST knowing exactly who they are. Jayden Gamboa is one of them.

A proud seven-year DSST Raptor, Jayden carries a story that stretches across generations, borders, and open pastures — and he's about to take that story with him to college.

Roots That Run Deep

Jayden's love of horses didn't start with a trail ride or a YouTube video. It started with family.

His grandfather rode in the National Western Stock Show after immigrating from Durango, Mexico — appearing in newspapers, carrying a legacy on horseback. When age and injury eventually stepped in, Jayden's father picked up where his grandfather left off. And when Jayden came along, a third generation was ready.

"My dad just kept [my grandfather’s] legacy," Jayden shared. He plans to carry forward a story that began on the ranches of Durango, Mexico and planted roots right here in Colorado. Three generations deep and still going.

Today, the Gamboa family still owns horses in Colorado — including one that is 25 years old (about 75–85 in human years). One of Jayden's proudest memories is helping nurse his uncle's horse back to health through vitamins, therapy, and basic care — a horse that, eight years later, is still one of their top performers.

That kind of dedication? That's not just horsemanship. That's science. That's care. That's purpose.

An Internship That Confirmed Everything

During his junior year, Jayden was placed at Urban Farm — a local community farm — through DSST's internship program. There, he worked with sheep, chickens, donkeys, and horses. He was even present as sheep gave birth.

"This internship solidified my desire to follow my dreams," he said. "It showed me that I didn't have to be scared of my limits."

The connection didn't end when the internship did. The farm now uses horseshoes from the Gamboa family's horses — and one of their mares even has a foal with a Gamboa horse. That's not just networking. That's a community built through passion.

This is exactly what DSST's college and career readiness model is designed to do. Beginning in 9th grade, DSST works closely with students and families to explore individual interests and passions — and align those to real college and career pathways. For Jayden, that alignment was crystal clear.

Signing His Future

As DSST's network prepares for Senior Signing Day — our biggest annual celebration honoring 100% of seniors earning admission to college and postsecondary programs — Jayden is ready to make it official.

He's setting his sights on Oklahoma Horseshoeing School, a specialized program that aligns perfectly with his lifelong passion for equine care. He also explored options closer to home, including MSU Denver, Pickens Technical College and other community colleges — reflecting the thorough, personalized college exploration process DSST supports for every student.

Seven Years of DSST, A Lifetime of Values

Jayden has been a Raptor since 6th grade — through middle school, through high school, through a pandemic year, through all of it.

When asked how DSST shaped him, he didn't hesitate:

"DSST helped me shape my dreams because they have really established the core values into my everyday life. I know that I will carry them into my future."

He pointed to courage as the value that has grown the most in him. This year, Jayden stepped up to co-plan senior events — presenting details in front of his peers, leading with confidence he didn't always know he had.

He also credited two people who kept him going:

Mr. Ramsey, his music teacher since freshman year, who challenged him to face hard truths, grow through discomfort, and keep showing up — even when it was hard. And his mom, who never let him forget that showing up to school on time was practice for showing up to life. "If you don't show up to school on time, how are you going to go to work on time?"

A Message for the Next Generation

With a younger brother entering DSST as a freshman soon, Jayden had a message ready — for his brother, and for every student just starting their journey:

"Stay on task and focus on school. Time flies. So make the most of it."

Congratulations Jayden, we can’t wait to see everything you will accomplish!
