We all know that education funding in Colorado has been a challenge for years, and while that hasn’t stopped us from delivering a world-class education to all of our students, we continue to advocate for much-needed change. From salaries to curricular resources to extracurriculars, less funding means more hard choices and possible trade-offs for both our schools and the Home Office. You may have already been involved in the many different advocacy efforts our network has participated in, or perhaps you are already engaged with the community in another capacity. Today we share some new ways that you can get involved to push our legislators to vote for additional funding so that our educators and students have the resources that they need.
Over the past year, we’ve pushed for change as a network in many ways. We took a day off from normal school operations to advocate at the State Capitol for more education funding through the Red for Ed March. We’re working hard to inform students and families of the challenges that Colorado is facing, to encourage our entire community to have a voice. We’ve supported efforts for mill equalization funding for charter schools and we strongly backed Amendment 73 on last November’s ballot.
Sadly, Amendment 73 was voted down, and funding for education continues to be a real pain point. With increased attention on this issue, we plan to channel the desire for change towards concrete policy shifts that would influence how Colorado funds its public education system.
On Wednesday, March 13, Leslie Colwell, Vice President for K-12 Education Initiatives at the Colorado Children’s Campaign, will present at the Home Office on two of the most promising potential pieces of legislation that could increase education funding in Colorado in an impactful way. She will provide resources for understanding the proposals, answer your questions, and inform everyone on how to get more involved. If you are looking for actionable ways to make a change, this is a great opportunity!
We hope to see you at the Home Office on March 13 from 5-6 PM. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by March 8.
Please reach out to Hillary Hoffman if you have any questions.
