This week, we are proud to shout out the founding class of DSST: College View High School, graduating in May 2019! Most started in the very first sixth grade class at DSST: College View Middle School back in Fall 2012, and are now busy preparing for their bright future.

To get a glimpse into what it means to be part of the founding class, we spoke with two seniors, Gabby Gonzalez and Diego Garcia, who shared why they love being a CV student, challenges encountered along the way, future goals, and advice for new students.
One of the most inspirational aspects of speaking with Gabby and Diego was learning about the close-knit community the founding class has cultivated. Gabby’s favorite part of CV is the fact that while there may be differences, at the end of the day she knows she can count on each of her classmates to have her back. Similarly, Diego is grateful to have a connection with every single one of his classmates, and is really excited to see how each will stride into their next chapters.
Being part of the founding class didn’t come without its own challenges. Walking to the Loretto Heights college campus to eat lunch,or having limited access to a gym that wasn’t built until they were in 8th grade may have been inconvenient, but it only brought the group closer together. It didn’t hurt to be surrounded by supportive teachers and staff. Both Gabby and Diego gave a special shout out to Ms. Gonzalez-Fine, their college guidance counselor. When Diego began high school, he was “clueless about schools and scholarships,” but “Ms. Gonzalez-Fine is so passionate about what she does,” and helped him create a plan for college and build even deeper connections with his classmates and teachers.
Next year, they both plan to get one step closer to becoming doctors. Gabby would like to be a dermatologist, and Diego, a pediatrician. What excites them the most about college? For Gabby, it’s branching out and meeting some new people. Diego is excited to step out and forge his own path, achieving the goals he has set for himself.
Being part of the founding class has also bestowed these seniors with much wisdom that they are happy to impart on the rising Freshmen. It’s no surprise that Doing Your Best was the resounding message. Gabby emphasizes working hard from the very beginning, for good habits and a strong start will set you up for a successful finish. Diego adds that every point counts- take school seriously and join as many clubs as you can!
Want to hear more from Gabby and Diego? We do too! Stay tuned throughout the year as we follow them both, capturing video and sharing details of their college success journey.
