Dispatch from the 2020 Polls!

Posted by Ellianna Nixon on 11/03/20

Yesterday and today, I’ve been stationed at the Barnum Recreation Center VSPC (Voting Service Polling Center) as an election support judge and it has been a really wonderful experience thus far! All of my fellow poll workers are passionate and energetic about the election process and hoping to contribute in whatever way they can to this crucial election cycle, as was my motivation to sign up this year. Typically, the average age of a poll worker is 65, so this year it was especially important for a younger demographic to work the election due to COVID health risks.

This was my first time as a poll worker and I was able to learn a lot about the life cycle of a ballot and the election process in general. It’s been very inspiring to work at a polling center in Denver specifically because the process is very efficient and streamlined for all voters. Due to the high percentage of voters voting by mail or through the ballot dropboxes this year, the waiting lines in the polling centers have not exceeded 15 minutes across the county, making the voting process painless and accessible to all. As of 4:00 p.m. Monday evening, Colorado already had 73% voter turnout for eligible voters and is on track to break records nationwide for historical voter engagement!

From 70 year-olds voting for the first time ever, to high schoolers excited about their newly acquired voter eligibility, it has been very powerful to witness the diverse range of voters coming to the polls and making their voices heard. There have been voters coming from near and far despite obstacles because they understand that every vote counts. Voters with disabilities and literacy impairments were beaming with pride after leaving the VSPC donning an “I Voted” sticker. Parents proudly brought their children along with them to show them the importance of voting.

In a very dark time in our nation, this experience has provided me with hope. Our country may be divided, but I had the opportunity to witness all parties coming together to ensure that, despite political affiliations, voices are being heard and rights are being exercised.

I am passionate about civic engagement and strongly believe that if you’re empowered enough about an issue to speak out, then you also need to take action to back your words. Voting is one of the easiest ways to take action!

While voting season officially ends today, uncertainty will still be at the forefront of the news cycle. It’s easy to get sucked into the doom and gloom of 2020, but it’s important to unplug and recharge as we await the final call. I look to our students and their futures as hope for our country and world. I know that we can and will work to a better future.

Best,

Ellianna Nixon
