Help Us Recruit a Diverse Team!

Posted by DSST Public Schools on 05/04/21

Dear DSST Family,

We are reaching out today to give you all an update on staff recruitment this past year, to ask for your help, AND award you a referral bonus for your hard work!

What We’ve Done

One of our commitments in our work to become an anti-racist organization this year is to commit to the active recruitment and retention of staff of color in the teaching and leadership pipelines. The DSST Talent Acquisition Team has been hard at work all year alongside many of you to ensure we have the most talented and diverse pipeline possible, using many strategies. The below are just a few:

  • Increased partnerships with recruiting sources and job boards specializing in sourcing candidates of color
  • Provided Bias in Hiring training to all School and Home Office teams to normalize addressing how bias impacts our decision making
  • Relaunched the Apprentice Teacher Program marketing materials and website to better reflect the diversity of teachers in our program
  • Expanded alumni recruitment for DSST roles in partnership with College Success team
  • Attended 9 career fairs including fairs at HBCUs and HSIs and the Diversity in Ed campaign in addition to adjusting language in Job Descriptions and Referral Policies to affirm candidates from diverse backgrounds and candidates that have a strong belief in DEI.
  • Worked with DPS & Workday to make gender & pronoun affirmation available through the hiring and onboarding process no matter an individual’s sex at birth assignment

Our Commitments

In support of the commitment to actively recruit staff and retain staff of color in the teaching and leadership pipelines, we know that when there is a more racially and ethnically diverse candidate pool, there is a greater likelihood of really making a change in this space. With this commitment, our Pipelines and Talent Acquisition teams created two goals:

#1: Source 300+ applications from teachers that identify as teachers of color.

#2: 50% or more of DSST 21-22 Apprentice Teachers identify as people of color.

How You Can Help

Recruitment is a full network effort, and we need your help. Please consider sharing the opportunity to work at DSST with your larger network! If you tag DSST in a social media post, or send a picture of you recruiting or posting flyers to caitlin.mcelhaney@scienceandtech.org, you will receive a raffle entry for each post or recruiting activity.  The raffle drawing will be June 4th for a $500 bonus added to your mid- June paycheck! And don’t forget- for every candidate that you refer and that is hired, you can get up to $1,000 in a referral bonus!

We know that not everyone is comfortable posting on social media, so we have compiled some different ways that you can support.
