The theme of Slice of Pi this year is DSST’s 15th anniversary. We are honoring the seven founders who pre-date Bill Kurtz and who worked so hard to make DSST happen. Five of the seven were women, all with STEM backgrounds, pioneers in their fields.
About the stipend:
1) A DSST MS and a DSST HS on the same campus can both apply to send a student demo.
2) In fact, a DSST school can submit as many applications as desired.
3) “Judging” will consist of evaluating the idea, and then talking to the demo leader to get a sense of the demo. We do NOT expect to “audition” a demo.
4) It’s up to the school director to decide how to use the $10,000. It’s a stipend for the school, not for the demo leader. (It’s unlikely we would choose 2 demos from one DSST campus for equity reasons, but not impossible). How the school director spends the stipend does not have to connect to the demo in any way.
5) That said, the school director and the demo leader can decide to use stipend funds to cover costs for the demo.
6) The school director should “approve” the application(s) to ensure that the school director is looped in and to ensure that the demo leader understands that the stipend is for the school.
7) $5,000 is available upon notification of being chosen to participate in Slice of Pi; $5,000 is payable 5/1.
8) Stipend can be spent in SY 18-19 and/or SY19-20.
Why have we decided to change the student demo process?
· Demos are a big lift for the school at a busy time of year; it’s a big ask to make of schools and we want to reflect their contribution to the event’s success.
· Now that there are so many DSST schools, it’s not feasible to have a demo from every school. Only the demos on the main hall of Stapleton HS get enough traffic to make it worth the investment of time a demo requires.
· We have added different sponsorship categories to slice of pi: One of the new categories is a $15,000 sponsorship of six-eight student demos. That is the source of the stipend funds. We chose six to eight because that is the number of rooms in SHS that are highly accessible to the guests.
How will we choose?
-
We will choose with the lens of quality, equity and variety.
-
The demos should be interesting to the guests; should show the variety of DSST education; should be interactive.
