Mentors fuel innovation as DSST students reach for the sky

At DSST Public Schools, students participate in enriching programs that spark curiosity beyond the classroom—and even beyond Earth’s surface. Programs like CubeSat give students the opportunity to apply science, math and technology skills to analyze real-world factors like temperature, altitude, humidity and gas levels in the atmosphere.

It’s truly inspiring to see how DSST students take ownership of their learning. Through CubeSat, they manage their own timelines, work collaboratively in teams, and engage deeply in problem-solving—especially with the pressure of a fixed deadline to launch their satellite. This after-school program is entirely student-led, with project design and execution happening outside of class time.

While students take the lead, they’re supported by dedicated mentors from industry partners who help elevate their work. Mentors like Logan Althoff provide invaluable guidance and encouragement—whether they’re troubleshooting tricky design issues, connecting students with industry experts, or simply offering motivation during tough moments. Their passion and commitment have made a lasting impact, empowering DSST students to grow both personally and professionally.

As Althoff shared, in engineering, getting an early start can make a profound difference. When students are introduced to foundational concepts early on, they begin to see how individual components connect to complex systems. Mentors play a crucial role in this process, helping students think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and link theory to real-world applications. This early exposure sets students up for long-term success, preparing them to navigate academic challenges and enter college with confidence and a sense of purpose.
