At DSST we care about your development and wellness as a whole person, not just as an employee. Before you begin at DSST this July, we wanted to share some fun events happening in Denver this summer. For those of you new to Denver, we hope you have some time to explore your new city and enjoy the sunshine.
Creating a college-going culture is something DSST has strived for since day one, and we are continuously looking to improve the access our students have to top 4-year universities and their success through college; which is why building up our college success program is one of our network-wide goals for the 2018-2019 school year.
Recently, integrated schools have been a focus of a number of publications. And for good reason. Integrated schools have the power to close all-too-wide achievement gaps all while improving average test scores for all students and reducing all students biases.
DSST campuses are where the majority of our staff work; however, there is a small but mighty group that work out of the Home Office. The Home Office is equivalent to our districts’ network level support. You have already interacted with several of the Home Office staff and as you go into your first year at DSST, you will continue to interact with even more.
School Choice and Student Recruitment
Like many urban school districts at the turn of the century, Denver Public Schools (DPS) struggled with underperforming schools and a significant decline in enrollment in the early 2000s. By 2005, nearly a third of the seats inside the district were empty and around 15 percent of students had left for private or suburban schools.
Charter schools have existed within the United States since 1992, yet many people are still confused about what a “charter school” is. A charter school defined by the United State Department of Education as a publicly funded school established by teachers, parents, or community groups under the terms of a charter with a local or national authority. In short, a charter school is a public school that has autonomy inside the school while being held accountable to an authorizer - usually a nonprofit or government entity. Meaning public charters such as DSST serve ALL students and are tuition free.
