Highlighting Exemplary College Readiness Network-wide

Posted by Stefanie Gilary on 09/13/19

A couple of weeks ago, we shared exemplary CMAS results from many of our Middle Schools for various student subgroups, including ELL, FRL, and Special Education. Today we’re focusing on the recently reported 18-19 SAT scores showing that our students across numerous demographics have seen incredible growth and proficiency in both math and literacy. This is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of our committed staff and resilient students.

DSST had 2 of the top 3 high schools in the state for Math growth (MGP)- congratulations to DSST: Green Valley Ranch HS and DSST: Conservatory Green HS.  The average network Math MGP was 70, 11 points higher than the prior year, and the average ELA MGP was 55, 10 points higher than the prior year. Overall, all six DSST High Schools are in the top 10 in Denver for combined high school growth

For proficiency, DSST outperformed both the state and the district on average SAT scores, reporting an average of 1091, compared to a state average of 1001 and DPS average of 968.

As we know too well, across the nation and the state, we see large and inexcusable gaps in the performance of low income students versus their more affluent peers. In Denver and Aurora, this is still all too true.  Given this context, we are incredibly proud to report that DSST: Byers HS, DSST: Montview HS, and DSST: Green Valley Ranch HS were 3 of the top 5 schools in Colorado with the highest SAT scores for FRL students.

Along with proficiency, FRL students saw stellar growth in math. Congratulations to DSST: Green Valley Ranch; DSST: Conservatory Green; DSST: Byers; DSST: Cole; DSST: Montview for being 5 of the top 6 schools in Denver for FRL high school math growth

Another key group of students that made great progress were ELL students. Of the 38 schools that serve enough ELL students to report their results, DSST makes up 5 of the top 6 schools in Denver for ELL high school math growth. Congratulations to the students and staff at DSST: Green Valley Ranch, DSST: Conservatory Green, DSST: Byers, and DSST: Montview! .

Next week, we’ll be diving deeper into the success that our African American/Black students have seen, and will be speaking with a couple students and staff who have contributed to this growth.  In light of DPS’s Black Excellence Resolution - an effort to reinforce and strengthen the district’s commitment to Denver’s diverse community- continuing to explore the growth and achievement of African American/Black students is especially important.
