We asked Lori Barr, a parent from DSST: Byers, to share why she chose DSST for her son and why she thinks others should too. Here is what she said.
What made you pick DSST for your student?
We originally were drawn to DSST for its academic rigor, structure and size. It felt manageable and a good fit for our son, his personality and his interests. Once we came to the open house for 6th grade we were sold – we felt a true sense of care and connection from the staff and appreciated the core values.
What have you liked most about DSST and why?
The teachers are wonderful and really know the students. We feel comfortable reaching out to teachers and staff with questions and concerns and feel heard and valued. Our son feels connected in the community and supported academically.
Why do you think DSST stands out when compared to other schools?
From what I have heard...the ability for teachers to really get to know and support the students doesn’t happen everywhere.
How would you describe your experience at DSST to someone thinking about sending their student here?
It has been a very positive experience both as a parent and for my student. The leadership and teachers are open and engaged with parents while helping students build self-efficacy skills and responsibility. It has been wonderful to see our son grow and flourish with guidance and support from the Byers community.
