As homes have become offices or virtual classrooms, having clear and accessible education technology systems, and people who can help us troubleshoot, is more important than ever. During your own troubleshooting, you may have already e-met Lori Apabo, Education Technology Coordinator at the Home Office, who helps staff from across the network navigate our different tech systems and unravel the snafus that may happen now and again. While working from home, her two cats and Pets of the Week Odin the Great, King of Meowsgaard, and Meowcolm X, keep her entertained.
You may have already seen the news coverage citing research that reports wearing a neck gaiter-style mask is much less effective than other masks. And isn’t it so 2020 that we just handed out these particular masks to our entire team of 800+ people, and 6,000 students?!
We know school will look different this year. Yet just like last Spring, we continue to do our best to offer innovative and fun ways for students to connect meaningfully with their peers and spark curiosity, even if it’s through a screen. That’s why we’re excited to announce our DSST Opt-Ins, Exploration Courses for Grades 9-12!
Every year, we kick off the new school year with Infusion. 20-21 was no exception, but the virtual event certainly looked different than years past. Home Office Manager of Events Katie Glenn is the logistics mastermind behind this event, as well as other network favorites including Senior Signing Day and the Holiday Party. Katie makes planning and executing enormous and intricately detailed events look like a breeze, always with a joke and a smile. But all joking aside, she’d likely agree that it’s about time her family’s two cats, Jack and Jill, and dog Simon had their 15 minutes of Helix fame!
Thank you for joining us on Monday morning for our very first virtual Infusion! Every year, we celebrate the Flower People across the network who make their school communities a better place through their kindness, creativity, thoughtfulness, and more. In case you wanted to watch the videos again, we’ve included them here. Enjoy!
We hope you are all having a great summer and have found some time to relax and reconnect with friends and family in the sunshine. We are so excited to kick off the new school year with all of you during our very first Virtual Infusion on Monday, August 3! We’re reaching out today with some details about Infusion, as well as a quick reminder about tomorrow’s optional Town Hall.
While our pets may be getting even more walks and quality human time than ever before, they have not enjoyed their due attention on the Helix lately. So what better way to close out the 19-20 school year than one more Pet of the Week who loves the outdoors- five year old Beta!
If you’re looking for the new Serial or Dirty John, this may not be it. But the Master Teacher podcast that just kicked off on Wednesday is definitely worth a listen! Andy Mendrop, Director of Marketing, Content, and Brand, will be speaking with different members of our network on a wide array of education topics.
Before everyone heads out to relax and recharge for the summer, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the generosity of our amazing DSST team. We raised nearly $80,000 in support of the DSST COVID Family Relief Fund, and this team played no small role in that success.
In a world of information overload, we all know that sifting through the many messages and news we receive on a daily, if not hourly basis, can be a challenge. It is compounded by fake news that continues to pervade social media platforms and websites. In times of pandemic, where emotions are already running high, fake news can be even more incendiary and harmful. For this week’s Project: Create challenge, K-12 students will have the opportunity to create a public service announcement or visual art piece (and perhaps, both!) addressing a societal issue in a factual way. The winners will receive 4 entry tickets and a gift basket from this week’s sponsor, the Denver Museum of Art, and will be featured on TV!
