The February chill hasn’t stopped students and staff across the network from celebrating Black History Month in fun and creative ways. Staff members, student leaders, as well as school-based Black Student Alliances (BSA), an organization that promotes achievement from awareness to activism, organized a range of activities for their school communities. This included Black History-themed Morning Meetings, guest speakers, parties, and more.
We are very close to finishing up our annual series of school “Town Halls” where Bill K and other members of the Home Office visit each school to listen to feedback from you all and field questions about the DSST network. We know this is a time commitment on your part so thank you again for the thoughtful questions and concerns we heard across schools. We have also been listening to your thoughts and questions through the mid-year survey and the comments on this blog, At Our Core. While every campus is different and has their own unique needs, we have noticed some common themes from these channels that we thought would be helpful to collectively address in one place. These includes Aurora expansion, changes to DSST’s health insurance coverage, school funding & facilities, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at DSST. We also want to share a couple of celebration points as well as areas for improvement from the mid year survey.
Good Morning DSST Team!
DSST is excited to launch our Content Expert role to leverage our teacher leaders who have demonstrated track records of transformational student results. Content Experts are teacher leaders who will support development during New Teacher Training and lead content-specific training throughout the school year.
DSST Public Schools recognizes that one of the best sources for new team members is referrals from current team members. Last school year, 50% of new hires came from referrals from current team members, community members, students, and families! To show our appreciation for referrals and the talent they bring to our network, DSST Public Schools offers a referral incentive bonus of $500 for every referral you make. Additionally, started February 8, 2019, all Math and Science teacher referrals will earn a $1000 bonus.
For the first time in 25 years, teachers in Denver are likely to strike on Monday, a teacher revolt that would have major implications for over a decade of education reinvention locally and around the country.
Dear DSST Staff,
Jeff Buck was the very first teacher to sign up for Denver’s revolutionary pay-for-performance system in 2005. More than 13 years later, he is one of a dozen teachers sitting in a conference room at an obscure school district building, trying to unravel what the system has become.
Teachers, the teachers union, district leaders, the school board, and community leaders are unanimous in calling for an effort to close our deplorable achievement gap, yet the outcome of the current teacher compensation impasse (and possible strike) will likely determine what happens to that achievement gap.
